Margaret Large FCA

Margaret qualified as a Chartered Accountant with top 8 international firm Grant Thornton in 1977 and went on to establish her own accountancy practice in Buckinghamshire. Relocating for family reasons to North Devon in 1992, Margaret has continued to build Large Chartered Accountants on a local basis organically and by acquiring four other local practices. As well as dealing with a broad spectrum of clients including start up businesses, partnerships, sole traders and limited companies, she also acts as Finance Director for a multi million pound business.

Margaret has a high business profile in Barnstaple where she acts as Treasurer of the Barnstaple Chamber of Commerce. Together with David she has a busy family life with four grown up children and one grandchild and is actively involved in her Parish Church and other local organisations.

David Large FCA

David qualified as a Chartered Accountant with top 8 international firm Grant Thornton in High Wycombe in 1973 and pursued a successful career as a manager with that firm, being responsible for several very substantial audits and for general practice management within the office. He left to join Margaret in the family practice in 1978 and as well as looking after a portfolio of clients he is responsible for systems and compliance. David championed the introduction of market leading accountancy software Iris when it came onto the market in 1981 and has continually positioned the practice at the leading edge of technological change to enable the efficient management of client’s affairs.

David is an active Rotarian being a past President of the Torrington Club.

Rob Tickell MA FCA

Rob is a Cambridge Graduate and trained as a Chartered Accountant with Grant Thornton in Birmingham. He qualified in 1987 and subsequently specialised in Corporate Finance before joining a local business as Finance Director. Following a career spanning some 20 years at Finance Director level in a variety of business sectors he relocated to Barnstaple in 2006 and thereafter moved back into the profession, setting up his own consultancy as an outsourced Finance Director for several North Devon businesses. He joined forces with Large Chartered Accountants in 2010 and as well as being a Partner his original practice now trades as “Devon Finance Director” through which he provides practical financial support to an expanding client portfolio that wants something more than just annual accounts and tax compliance work.

Rob is married to Michelle, who was born in Braunton and they have three children of whom the eldest is studying to be a professional musician in London. Michelle runs the music group at St Mary’s Church in Barnstaple and Rob is a successful amateur golfer, having gained a blue at Cambridge and played at County level for many years.

CONSULTANT

Brian Hockin

Brian Hockin has worked as an accountant and business advisor in North Devon for many years and over that time built up his own practice until he merged it with Large in 1987. Brian specialises in advising clients in the Freight Industry and is well respected for his knowledge and advice to enable them to trade profitably in what is a difficult industry with ever increasing fuel costs. In his spare time Brian likes nothing better than to unwind with a round of golf.

ACCOUNT MANAGERS

John Bartlett FCCA

John Bartlett is the team member who, as a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and a member of the Institute of Tax is responsible for much of the tax work within the practice. John is an able tennis player, is a county Bridge player and an avid collector of old films.

Sue Ackland FCCA

Sue Ackland, who is also a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants is responsible for her own portfolio of clients and she brings a tremendous wealth of experience to the team dealing with many of the firm’s farming clients and those in the tourism industry. She is the Devon County Treasurer for the Girl Guide Association./p>

Sally Ann Balment MAAT

Sally Ann Balment is a member of the Association of Accounting Technicians and has recently completed the examinations to become a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. Sally Ann deals with all aspects of client affairs including bookkeeping, VAT, accounts production and taxation.

Sally Ann is Secretary to her local Young Farmers group and assists on the family farm.

Susan Roper

Susan Roper qualified as a member of the Association of Accounting Technicians following a career change having previously qualified as a Vet. She is continuing her studies to become a fully qualified accountant as a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. Susan deals with all aspects of client affairs including bookkeeping, VAT, accounts production and taxation.

SUPPORT TEAM

Lorna Nott

Lorna Nott handles much of the firm’s VAT work and is very experienced in dealing with accounts preparation for sole proprietors and small businesses. As a livestock farmer she is very aware of the problems facing the industry and her advice is invaluable when dealing with this sector.

Katherine Large

Katherine handles the majority of the firm’s Payroll Bureau work as well as studying for the examinations leading to membership of the Association of Accounting Technicians.

She is an accomplished Horse rider and Eventer having competed in the finals of the Riding Club National championship.
